Habitat - Indoor :: Multiple Filters in tank?

Ok, so I don't have a wide variety of stores within my area that have a lot of turtle filters (four stores to be exact, and three of them really suck). Since I have a 50 gallon aquarium I was wondering if I could just get two 40 gallon filters and call it good.

Sure, it would be a pain in the butt, but due to a crappy filtration system I have two RES (3" each) in a 10 gallon aquarium until I can replace the crap crap crappy filter in their 50 gallon.

Maybe there is something I am overlooking, but it sounds like an ok idea to me.

Well first off, you have two turtles both three inches long. The rule is ten gallons per inch of shell. So you need at least a 60 gallon tank.

As for filters, you get a filter that is rated 3xs that of tank. So if you have a 20 gallon tank you get a filter that is made for a 60 gallon tank, for a 100 gallon tank, one for a 300 gallon tank etc.

You really should upgrade your tank and if nothing else since both turtles may get to be 12 inches you may want a 250 gallon tank so that you don't have to upgrade ever again.

A - Don't buy a filter made for turtles.

B - Don't buy a filter at a local store, unless they pricematch.

Put that money into a filter that will be effective when you upgrade the tank again (wha?), I'd suggest an XP3 or AquaClear 110.

The Aquaclear 110 would be a good filter for the tank you have now. It's not nearly as expensive as the XP3. Look for something with a GPH of at least 500.
From what I've read on Austin's Turtle Page, 2 turtles can occupy the same amount of space that you would use for one turtle, so you're okay in the 50 for now. Just remember that your turtles may decide that they don't want to live together anymore.

At a minimum, you should allow half as much space for a second turtle. So, 50 gallons for one turtle, 75 for two. I've never read of it being OK to keep two turtles in a space meant for one. One can, of course, but at the eventual detriment to the turtles...
