Habitat - Indoor :: Please Help

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Mon Dec 16, 2013 11:56 pm   Please Help

Hello everyone! I rescued my turtle, Storm the red eared slider, from a home where she lived in a 5 gallon tank, at 6 inches long and 3 inches wide. There was a large rain-storm, and the tank was filled all the way to the top with storm struggling to stay upright with the torrential rain falling down on her, and she was trying to climb out of the tank with a three foot fall straight to the concrete to greet her.

Long story short, I saved her, and bought a 45 gallon tank. I've gone through 4 different filters because I'll run them for a day or so, then they die. I've tried sand, and gravel, and I haven't been able to find a good vacuum to help get her feces out of the tank, so cleaning her tank proves to be a struggle.

I have half of a waterfall platform that she likes to sit on, and I created a tank cover so she can have a heating lamp which she adores.

So what I need help with: I am desperately in need a filter that will work, and won't die within 24-48 hours. Perhaps a substrate suggestion, and/or a vacuum suggestion to help clean the tank more efficiently.

I also want to make a proper basking area, but am unsure where to start, so if you have any suggestions they're greatly welcomed. I really want to make Storm's habitat wonderful for her, and right now, it's clean and healthy, but I know I can do so much better for her.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A cheap canister filter would work well. You can get a good one for about $100 - Rena XP3, a SunSun/Aquatop or Odyssea. A hang-on-tank style filter like an Aquaclear will do OK as well.

What substrate are you using now? For basking areas, I would look into cork bark but also acrylic platforms as well. Zoo Med makes a popular dock but I really don't like it much.

Substrate right now I'm using a fine sand.

We'd have a Fluval canister filter which broke. I could try an Aquaclear, but we only fill the 45 gallon tank about half way due to the small basking area.

Do you know where I could get a cork bark or acrylic platform that would fit a 45 gallon tank?

A hang on tank filter is not great unless the tank is filled up close to the top. It can work, but will be hard to prime, It'll also lose it's prime w/a power outage. What model Fluval did you have? Was it previously used?

Individual, thick pieces of cork bark is hard to find online nowadays, but check w/local florists and aquarium/reptile shops. ebay will have some too but I have not kept up with sellers to recommend any.

Fluval 206 is the model we had purchased, brand-new at petsmart. It lasted a few months, then it stopped working out of the blue, and wouldn't start again.

Sand is fine just make sure your filter is not sucking any in. Plexi at any good glass shop. Cork harder to find but search it there is some.

You're right! it's 50+ cheeper to buy the up to 75 gallon xp canister online than in store. and I can get it by thursday 'cause of their Christmas deals. thanks! I'll get that one.

I'll continue tol looki into a basking area. ideally I'd like to fill her tank 3/4s of the way instead of halfway.

What size tank do you have Kansasslider? I really like that basking area. Would the "blueprints" you have work for a 45 gallon wide tank?

Mine is a 40 gallon breeder tank. I think breeder means wide. You would just have to measure everything so it sits on the rim in the tank. If you have questions send me a pm and i can help you out with the build. I also have a 300 gallon stock tank in my basement working on a nice stone dock for that one.
