Hey, I just started raising my first pair of RES. Any clue as to which is male and female? They are 3-4 months old, and both seem to be about the same size.

It's basically impossible to know the sex of a turtle under 4" unless they were sexed by the incubation temp. There are a number of posts on here regarding this topic so you may want to search for the ways to identify both sexes.

It's supposed to be pretty accurate--for RES, a higher temp (around 85F) usually results in females. A lower temp (around 75F) results in males. For both sexes, incubation at around 80F is the temp I've usually seen given. But nothing is 100%.

When my aunt was working on her masters, she was controlling the sex of algea with different light and temperature. Kind of interesting that the same can be done with the temp of incubation. She now has a doctorate in marine biology, so I guess she knows what she's talking about.

Send me a private message, and I will see what I can do to hook you up. She teaches at St. Francis University in Loretta (sp?) Pennsylvania. If you want to browse their web page, I know that she has on online spot as well. Her name is Dr. Sue Morra, or Dr. Devonna Sue Morra. I'm not sure which name she goes by when she is there. I know there is a bio page on her, but I don't know if it has contact information. If it does, that is the email address I would have as well. I know she uses it. So, just let me know.
