Habitat - Indoor

My filter recently stopped working very well and the water has gotten very murky. I'm looking for a new filter but there are so many filters out there and so much lingo that I really don't understand what I'm looking at. I have a 40 gallon tank (I believe) and both of my turtles are about 5-6". Does anyone have a recommendation for a filter I should buy as a replacement?

What kind of filter did you have? Usually with a 40 gallon, I tell people to get something cheap (like an AquaClear) and save up on a bigger tank/filter upgrade.

What is considered a cheap vs an expensive filter? I think I'd like to keep the same size tank though and I'll get you a picture of the filter once I get home.

Do you know the genders of your turtles? Cheap filters are those knock-off canisters on eBay (Sun Sun), then you have your off brand (Odyssea), then the high-end stuff (Eheim, Fluval).

No I'm not really sure of their genders. The ideal filter for me would be $30-50 quiet and low maintenance.

Are either of them obvious males? I bring up males because they will need to be separated.

Are you looking to upgrade soon? An Aquaclear is decent and easy to maintain, I think they're good for smaller enclosures.

They have been together for over 7 years so I don't think that is a concern at this point. I will look into an Aquaclear, thank you!
