Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

My turtle is roughly 4.5 inches, closer to 4 inches now that I measure it. Money is a bit tight, I'm just a high school student that irresponsibly got a pet turtle when I was a little kid. I really want to give it a bigger tank, and I know that you need 10 gallons for every inch of the turtle. However, Aquarium prices are insane in Canada, $200 minimum for a 50 gallon tank, and I really can't afford that. Do you think that a 20 gallon tank is serviceable for my turtle. As mentioned before, I am very aware of the 10 gallon per inch rule, but honestly I think that it is a big extreme for a turtle (I know it's cruel too keep an animal in a small area, but I really don't think that the appropriate size for a turtle is really that linear of a function. I'm thinking more of a base size, plus a smaller increase per inch, but I digress). The sizes at petsmart go from 10, 20, and 50 gallons, jumping in price from $20, $40, and $200. I really can't just dish out $200, and I don't have any furniture that can support all that weight. So, again, sorry for the repetition, but do you think that a 20 gallon tank can do my turtle justice? I have a floating basking area, so I can fill the tank near the top. Also, do I need a special stand for a 20 gallon tank, or can any ordinary table handle the weight? I know this question is really general, and it depends on what kind of table I have, but considering that the tank is only 20 gallons, would any ordinary table, despite its 4 skinny legs, be able to support it's weight?

I would start saving for a bigger aquarium now. Once I upgraded my 4 inch turtle from a 20 to a 40 gallon, he seemed to have more fun swimming around (rather than swimming at the glass the whole time, like he was trying to escape). He also got a bit bigger, but only by about half an inch; still, I think it was healthy for him. When I got the new tank it seemed HUGE in comparison to the old one, even excessively so; but keep in mind that this is the turtle's whole world, so it's good to give them room to stretch and roam.

Are there any Petco stores up there? They have dollar per gallon sales about once a year (that's the only way I was able to upgrade mine). There are also cheaper options like stock tanks, preformed ponds, and acrylic tanks (which can get scratched). Most people will probably tell you to check Craigslist or other websites where people sell their old stuff. The other thing to keep in mind is that a bigger tank may need a bigger filter, so I would add that to the list of things to save up for too. After breaking a ton of those green filters that sit in the tank, I can say the more expensive external canister filters will save you money in the long run.

While you save up for a bigger tank, I think it would help to fill the 20 gallon up completely and add an above tank basking area, effectively doubling your turtle's swimming room. In fact, I've wondered if a 40 gallon tank that's half full is really better than a 20 gallon tank that's completely full--I'd like to know what others think! Here's a video that kind of explains how to make a sturdy and cheap ATBA with "egg crate" lighting material, which will let you fill the tank all the way and prevent your turtle from escaping:

As far as the tank stand, I'm really not sure. I only recently switched to a real tank stand from a sturdy coffee table, but I don't know how much I trust the new one either. I would honestly put my tank on the floor if I could, but the filter needs to be below the tank to work.

@samuel Thanks for the reply. I really would buy a nice sized tank for my turtle, if $1 per gallon were a thing. We don't have petco up here, the only aquarium is petsmart, and bigal's, who doesn't post their prices online, so I'm sort of stumped. The canadian dollar is in the trash right now, things are overpriced :( . I'm also pretty sure that $1 per gallon sales are impossible here, as we use the metric system, so finding a sale that uses gallon's would be rare, and due to our limited stores its even rarer. I've been checking kijiji, but people are only willing to sell their whole tank as kits, and 20 gallons are being priced over $100, which is a huge rip off. People that do sell their old 20 gallon aquariums sell them for 40 dollars, the price of a new one from petsmart, which I trust a lot more than visiting a strangers house (I'm only a high school student, I don't trust myself to stay completely safe). I guess I'll keep looking around kijiji, thanks for the reply :D

Oops, the metric system thing didn't occur to me :/ Hopefully some fellow Canadians will come across this and weigh in! In the meantime I'd look into that ATBA--the material should be available at all home improvement stores, and shouldn't cost more than $20 Canadian. One other thought--if you have a birthday coming up, you could ask family and friends for money to spend on the tank in lieu of gifts. If your turtle is a few years old and not quite pushing 5 inches yet (and a male), this could be the last tank you need to buy!

I am from Ontario Canada. I know how things are way more pricey up there. But I think your best bet is Yard/Garage sales. Or even Goodwill. We got our first tank for our hermit crabs from Goodwill.. Very cheap. I found the best way to get what you want on Kijiji is a want ad, with what you want and the amount you are willing to pay. There are tonnes of people browsing Kijiji that have a tank sitting in the shed, garage or basement collecting dust, who just forget about them. If they see an ad that someone is willing to pay them $40 for a 40 gallon that don't leak.. They may contact you.. And that way you aren't wasting your precious time searching searching searching.. But yes the filter situation is not sooo easy.. You will need a bigger better one for your bigger tank and I have yet to find a good deal on Craigslist on used filters. I know for a fact if you have to buy from petsmart you will be paying three times the money. YOu could try Ebay. Ca once you decide what filter you want and see if you could get it cheaper there.. Cheapest place I have found filters is DR. Foster and Smith, but I don't think they ship to Canada.

You could buy a rubber made container. I don't know how much they are in Canada, but compared to tanks they are much cheaper then a tank here for the size.. if you only fill a third of half way.. You turtle will have more room to swim.. but again you will need better filtration..
Petsmart in January here had 20 gallons for $20 and 40g Long tanks for $40 in January, right after Xmas. Maybe when you are in there next time ask an employee if they have that deal and if so when are they having the next one.. Will give you time to save..

Last time I shopped for tanks in Ontario they were still sized as gallon tanks, if they are not anymore, go on a website and find out what dimensions are of 40 gallon long tanks and then you will be able to compare up there when they have a sale.. My 40 g is 36" long x 18" width x 17" high.. I keep mine on a coffee table as well for now.. But I am looking for a dresser to keep it on. We need the extra storage space..lol Its only half full, because my turtle is still very small, but as he grows I intend to keep filling it, till he has whole tank and an above tank basking area.. He will probably be able to spend his whole life in this tank.. If he ends up being a male..lol

Totally outstanding recommendations for unclejoe and Samuel T Jackson on the tank sizes, where to buy from in yard sales, Goodwill, and online sites in addition to a large rubber maid container. I do agree that a twenty gallon would be to small but can work temporarily but not long term at all. Being a duel citizen to both America and the United Kingdom (England) and living in both Countries for long terms during my life, I am aware of the metric system used in European Nations as Canada is part of the EU. I also know the unbelievable price differences in purchasing anything. The Canadian dollar is not worth a lot either and frankly it is similar to the Australian Dollar which sucks really yet the purchasing prices for anything are unreal. You being a high school student as well, you do not have the full time jobs lined up to afford a large aquarium either based on you going to school full time. Please take the suggestions in consideration that both unclejoe and Samuel T Jackson has recommended for your best options for your pet turtle.

Alright, thank you for the replies. I ended up getting a 26 gallon tank. In the future, I may get a bigger one, but this is as big as it's gonna be for a while. The turtle looks like he has a lot of swimming room, and seems quite content. I filled up the tank more than 2/3rd of the way. I got the tank for $40 flat, with a lid, and according to big al's canada's prices, that near an $80 value. I'm happy with it. However, I do feel quite sad because I messed up in a few ways. My turtle managed to climb out of the turtle tank, and fell out while I wasn't in my room. I came back to find him not in my tank, with the lid moved over to the side (note that I could not lock the lid, due to my basking area being supported by sticks that rest on the top of the aquarium. The lid was just lying on top, just to prevent splashes). I found him under a bookshelf. I hope he's okay, but he seems fine (happened yesterday). He's swimming around and enjoying life, I just have a few questions.

1. How do I clean up all the poop at the bottom. Ever since I've moved him here, I've noticed that his feces were solid chunks, not the powdery broken up poop that was in my old tank (Although my old rubbermaid was MUCH smaller, so he probably broke it apart by swimming in it). I have 2 filters, which I do admit are under powered, but I really don't want to throw in another one, it adds cost, and electricity, and takes up precious tank space. Any tips? My two filters are a Tetra Whisper 2 10i, rated for 10 gallons, and one of these
: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B013OS ... UTF8&psc=1
A submersible filter, rated for 20 gallons. Considering I have a 26 gallon tank, shouldn't this be enough? A lot of the poop has been sucked up by the filters, but the solid chunks won't move. Even some of the powder won't move an inch, a bit of poop just rests at the bottom. I do not think that my filters are too weak, as in my old rubbermaid, I used the Tetra 2 10i filter alone, and it was more than capable of keeping the water crystal clear(although there was probably less than 10 gallons of water) Considering that the total gallons that my filters can handle is 30 gallons, shouldn't I be safe? Do I constantly need to siphon out the chunks of poop at the bottom? A separate feeding tank is not an option. My turtle is squirmy and I don't want to bother him.

2. Basking Area - I took out the basking area of my turtle tank for now. I can't close the lid if I use it, and he can climb out of the tank by climbing up the basking area, so I bought one on ebay, but it's gonna take 2-4 weeks to come. Is it fine if he doesn't have a basking area for this time (less than a month)?

3. ROCKS- I was planning to go bare bottom, but my turtle looked so bored doing nothing in his tank. I covered the bottom with nice rocks, polished river stones that I had lying around from a home decoration store. I washed them in hot water, and rinsed them 3 times with vinegar then water. There was no white bubbling. This should be safe for my aquarium right? I already tossed them in, as I spent a good 30 minutes cleaning them, and I think I did a good job. I'm worried that they might make the water too basic though, which might be an issue. Am I in the clear? My turtle really seems to enjoy them, and likes to toss them around

4. Loneliness - Admittedly, my turtle tank is quite empty, and I really want to add something to it, so he doesn't just float all day. I'm thinking of putting some feeder fish in there. Hopefully he doesn't eat them all at once, although he's never had quite the swimming space, nor the opportunity to chase, so he might be a slow swimmer (although I'm sure he's not because I've seen him dash around a lot before). Are Tetra's okay? I'm thinking of putting a few bleeding heart Tetra's, Bloodfin tetra's, and cardinal Tetra's. Can anyone tell me how many of each I should get? Do they make good playmates? I am fine with them getting eaten, and I want my turtle to experience hunting them, but I don't want them dead in 1 day. Are these fish fine. My water temperature is a bit low, so I don't know if they will survive (22 degrees Celsius/70 degrees Fahrenheit room temp, 21 degrees Celsius/72 degrees Fahrenheit tank temp)?

5. Ghost Shrimp - To solve the problem of the solid chunks of poop at the bottom, I was thinking of throwing in 2 ghost shrimp. I hear they clean poop well and feed off of it, but I have also heard that that is a lie, and that they do not only eat poop, and it is apparently unethical to not feed them and expect them to live off of poop. Can anyone confirm? Also, would they be fine for my turtle (if they do eat poop and are fine and all)? Would they get eaten in a day due to their small size. They don't seem very mobile and aside from the river stones at the bottom, my tank is empty.

6. Basking Light - I am planning to buy a uvb bulb soon (probably tomorrow). I'm looking at the Reptisun 10.0 or the 5.0. Which one would be the best for me? I really don't want uvb radiation, so I want something that can be put into a dome shaped lamp, that is weak enough to be put right against the screen cover (touching it), so all the uvb is directed into the tank, and any escaping light is filtered through the glass, thus not hurting me. I'm assuming that because I want the light practically touching the screen lid, it has to be weaker so it isn't harmful to the turtle right? There is roughly 15 centimeters of space from the lid to the surface of the water. My new basking area will be probably 2-3 cm above the water, so the uvb light would be roughly 12-13cm above the basking area (not taking in the height of the turtle). Would the reptisun 5.0 fit the bill, due to how close I would put it? Also, does the bulb offer any sort of heat? I'm currently using my lamp with an incandescent bulb for heat (at least I was, until he went all prison break on me), and I don't have any extra lamps to use as a heat lamp. If I'm putting it (reptisun 5.0 or 10.0)so close, will it produce any type of warmth?

7. Tank Location - I'm only allowed to have my tank in my room. Will my activities disturb the turtle. I pretty much only use my computer in my room, or lift weights. However, my main concern is that I work on my homework until late at night on the days that I go to work, (until 1-2am), and I'm wondering if the fact that I keep my lights on are bothering him. Also, when my computer is turned off it flashes a blue led for style, and I'm wondering if it would bother the turtle, I hope not. It could be 12:30 am, and I can hear my turtle splashing around really loudly, is it bothered by the light, or are turtles just naturally supposed to play and stuff at any time of the day.

8. This brings me to my last question. When I get my uvb bulb, I plan to turn it on for 12 hours. However, I can't leave it on all the time, so I want to do it during non peak hours. I'm thinking from 7pm to 7am. It's cheaper electricity costs, and my turtle can bask in peace when no one is moving (cause they're sleeping). I plan to do this because apparently turtles sleep at any time of the day, and can be active at night doing their own thing, so I am willing to turn their uvb bulb on during those hours. Can anyone tell me if this is true, or that turtles NEED darkness and to sleep during the night.

Thanks for the response :D
