I just purchased a 55 gallon tank and was considering buying a Fluval 406 filter for my red eared slider. Any reviews on this filter? Also, how often do you clean the tank when using this filter? Thanks!

I'm not a big fan of those fluval styles, though their FX series is superb. Cleanings should be every 1-2 months... it's different with every keeper and you should find the easiest and simplest way to do it for yourself.

Agreed as I am not a fan of them either. What I did with my 55 that was cheaper I feel and it seemed to do the job well is that I went on and purchased two of the largest (AquaTechPower Filter 30-60) that costed me just under 80 dollars from walmart and used it with approximate 40 gallons of water in the tank there for the tank had up to 3 times the amount of filtration per gallon ratio. I have always believed that with turtles that I should go with a bare minimum of double the filtration per gallon ratio which in my opinion has proved to be fact and worked well for me. I have a 75 gallon that I utilized the fluval that costed me more money to buy and again near triple ration per gallon that was clearly less effective in keeping the tank clean.

I know many people are against Aqua Tech Power systems being a walmart carried brand that a lot of people consider cheap and I normally go by the saying " You pay for what you get so spend more on name brands" . In the filtration area though in comparison with testing them both personally, I am leaning with, two AquaTechPower 30-60 that is half the price of the fluval and has proven itself resulting in a much better job tha the fluval.
