Habitat - Outdoor :: UV sterilizer

A few weeks ago a nice new pond was built for us in our back yard. It's round, 6' in diameter and the water a little more than 2' deep. About 1' of water is below ground and 1' is above ground. It will be Spot's summer home when the water quality issues have been worked out.

The guy that built the pond installed a UV Sterilizer to prevent algae and bad bacteria. He thinks it will be ok for Spot but I don't think he's had much experience. Does anyone else use a UV Sterilizer in their turtle pond? Do you think it's ok?

I've often read that UV sterilizers are unnecessary to use with turtles. They are designed to kill bacteria, parasites and other microorganisms and can be really helpful in reducing serious algae problems. They are for more sensitive inhabitants and habitats, but there are a few who use it turtle setups. I believe they're not operated 24/7 and they are quiet expensive.

Yeah, I didn't ask for it, the installer just put it in. He's accustomed to building koi ponds. I think koi are more delicate. He's got it set to run 24/7 but I'm going to turn it off when it gets cold. Turns out it added $130 to the bid - not really bad in the great scheme of things. The pond is really pretty. I'll put pictures on here when I get it all done.
