Habitat - Outdoor :: Algea cycle in my pond

Ponds and other outdoor enclosures.

Post Posted: Tue Aug 18, 2009 12:32 am   Algea cycle in my pond

how long does the algea cycle last? Ive got a new setup with my 270 gallon preformed pond, im running a skippy type filter with a 300gph pump with a pre filter and a 200gph pump, both running into the skippy filter, the media is sponge material and lava rocks. I feed my 3 turts once a day and i have about 15 minnows and 4 goldfish in it, with large limestone type stones in it. It just started the cycle 2 days ago. What can I expect to be the time frame of the "green water" Suggestions to get rid of it?Chemicals, and timeframe that they "really" take to work? I do have a few plants in it, but probably not enough. Any suggestions or comments would be great. Its been running about 2 weeks now.

There's a nitrogen cycle, but I've never heard of an algae cycle---once it starts to grow, it continues until it's eradicated. You can take steps to minimize it. With a pond that's constantly in the sun, though, it will be difficult to do so.

You could get some aquatic plants that cover the surface (duckweed, water hyacinth, for example, to limit the light the water gets. A filter with a UV sterilizer would help, if you want to spend the money.

Pond Care is magic!!!! From the day i put it in, til the second treatment which was a total of 6 days, it was a diffrence of night and day!! If anybody has the green water problem it works wonders!! Not trying to plug Pond Care but it has worked wonders so far!!!!!!!!!! I bought it at petsmart, but petco carries it too. Petsmart was 3 dollars cheaper.

Hey glad to hear. But you shouldn't continue adding these chemicals into the pond. Water Hyacinths are the perfect natural ingredient to eradicate the growth of algae. Algae feed on nitrates and these plants just absorb all the nitrates in ponds. In my pond, I know rely heavily on these Water Hyacinths for algae control, my god they really help especially since I live in South East Asia where room temperature's about 30 degrees celsius.
