Habitat - Outdoor :: habitats for our new turtles

Ponds and other outdoor enclosures.

My children were bought a 6 month old yellow billed slider each for Christmas (one male one female). They are currently in a tank in the kitchen and I have been told that they can be transferred into the garden pond when they are a little older. Does anyone have any advice? We live in England and there is very little information available about turtles here as they are a very unusual pet.

Welcome. (You're 5 hours ahead of us in New England?)

Yellow-bellied sliders (YBS) require essentially the same care as RES, so it would be good to do some reading on this site (you could also do a web search on YBS) to make sure you're giving them the care they require. Then if you have specific questions, feel free to post. :)

How big are your 6-month old turtles (shell lengths of each not including the curves of the shells)? They can live in garden ponds that are escape proof and predator proof. Don't know how cold it gets in the winter where you are, but they will hibernate if the temps drop too low. Don't know if the pond you have would be suitable for hibernation; hibernation carries risks, and you may want to keep them inside in the winter/cool months. More info is needed here...

I think she's saying she lives in England, not New England :) There are a few others here from the UK/Ireland and the like and have difficulty getting information and equipment also.

What size is your tank? Do you have any other equipment such as lights, heater, filter?

I know she lives in England (North West England to be precise). I was merely comparing the time difference with where she is to me in CT (New England). :)

It's just a thing with me--I'll sometimes try to figure out what time a post would have been written in EST when the poster is in a different part of the world. :)
