I have a sick turtle I'm nursing inside and we recently bought a RES for our outside pond, which we promptly plopped in. We haven't seen him in the two days since we plopped him in, I think it is possible that he took off. To clarify, my dad ran out and bought the RES from a local aquatics store on his day off despite having turtles run off in the past and lacking a decent fence around the pond (it is rather small and he is rather impulsive  ).

So, any tips on setting up a low fence around a small (300-500 gallons) pond? Using what we have, I've been placing rocks around to create a 3-5" barrier with surfaces that would make it difficult for a turtle climb. I'm considering putting up a low fence (1 foot or under) in other areas to better secure things and prevent any escapees. Any suggestions on what to look for?

Here's a couple. This first is a brand new post from the photo forum. The top photo is the pond where the turtles are. I think the turtles will be able to climb out of the pond pretty easily, but do you see the low wall behind the pond? They will never climb that wall.

Here's a pic of our pond. The flagstones around the top overhand the walls of the pond so our turtle won't be able to escape.

Here's an example of my pond that I just did.

I bought several fence posts, about 4 feet tall. On one end, I used the house as the barrier. But I sunk the posts about 6 inches into the ground. One for each corner and then one in the middle seemed best to support the fence. Next I took a role of chicken wire and attached it to each post using long plastic twist ties used for bundling electric wires. I used 4 twist ties on each post. Then when I was done, I roughly put about 10 staples into the ground on each side. The staples go about 3 inches into the ground and hold the wire down. There is no way the turtle is going to get out. All in all, for my enclosure it cost me about $25 or so to make.
