We've had Mindy for 6 or 7 years in an outdoor pond in Southern California. Pond is about 1,000 gallons with lots of hyacinths and cattails. Mostly we have never fed her except to put feeder goldfish and mosquito fish in the pond. I see now that goldfish are not recommended. This year I started being diligent about feeding her, but I've been giving her pellets, canned green peas on a toothpick, and small bits of cooked chicken. Now I learn all of that is not recommended. Today I went down with red leaf lettuce and she's definitely NOT INTERESTED. I suppose she has been spoiled by all the junk food. She swims to my hand and strains to get out of the water and byte my finger tips, hoping I have a green pea or chicken bit.

So I'm wondering if I need to feed her at all. She took care of herself for 5 years on algae and water plants. She'll eat pellets. It seems like I have done her a disservice trying to be proactive. Should I just leave her to her pond plants?

If she's got variety in there, I think she'll be fine. You can continue to use pellets and chicken on occasion. As for goldfish, you can put minnows in there as they are better for her, but they're not something she is likely catching and eating every day.
