I have been using the Rena XP3 in my 90 gallon for the past 3 years or so. It worked great for the first 2 years or so but it gradually has lost it ability to properly filter the tank. Even after thorough cleanings of the impeller and everything it still just doesn't have the power it did when it was new. I think the motor is probably wearing out which honestly it shouldn't be already.

I just bought a Fluval FX5 which I will be setting up tomorrow. It is 3 times more powerful than the XP3 and I got it for about the same price I paid for the XP3 3 years ago which was about $200. The FX5 so far seems pretty impressive. Hopefully it will perform as well as it appears.

Cross-K -- I would suggest that you consider a 300 to 350 gph for the 55 gallon. I use s Fluval 405 and a Marineland 350 and they do just fine. What ever you get just check the gph.
