Steve always strongly recommends using a GFI or GFCI to protect from a fatal electric shock in case a turtle does bite through a cord or a light falls in the water etc. You can get these devices at home improvement stores like Home Depot. They're not cheap (mine was about $25) but I sleep better at night knowing it's there.

Spotsmama, tell me more about GFI and GFCI.I have to admit that my worst fear is the basking lamp falling into the water :( . I would be crushed if that were to happen and my turtles would get shocked!

Yeah, it's something to think about. Someone on here a long time ago wrote about how their lamp fell in the water and started a fire and burned up the basement. You can guess what happened to the turtles.

GFI or GFCI (same thing) is a ground fault circuit interrupter. They can sense when there's a ground fault and almost instantaneously cut off the power. I use a portable one, which is just like a power strip. You can also have them installed by an electrician in the place of a regular electrical outlet.

Google "GFCI" and you'll find all sorts of info on them.
