There's only 1/5 pet stores around here with Rena filter media, and it isn't quite everything (they have the stars, but no rings). Every place I go though has stuff like a box of activated carbon or ammonia remover or whatever. It seems like it would be about half the price if I could use this media, but how would I use it? Would I just dump it into the bucket or would I need to make like a cloth pouch for it?

You could use an old (clean) pair of pantyhose. Cut the feet off and put the carbon in there then tie it up
