I think I've seen something similar in a local reptile shop for about $20, maybe $30. Still, if it doesn't provide UVB then why do anything except a normal light bulb?

Halogens provide a lot of light and heat, more than an average bulb of the same wattage. This particular one, $8.49, is marketed as splash-proof as well. I do suspect that these are the same as regular halogens, but about $1 more.

Ah. So if you have to keep your light at a greater distance from the dock but need more heat than what is provided with a normal bulb. Gotcha.
