Sup.

I just picked up this little white turtle-shaped water conditioner (looks like little turtle bar soap). You're supposed to just drop it in the water and it slowly dissolves, releasing active ingredients that condition the water. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, please advise. First, is it really safe for two baby RES (would they try to eat it), and is it really necessary/useful? Any help is appreciated!

I think they would try to eat it if it were in the tank, which would not be a good thing.

Someone on here uses them, however, and puts them in the filter. Clever, huh? It dissolves in the water but the turt can't get it.

Several other people have said not to bother with them.

What are the "active ingredients" that condition the water? If one is sulfa, I wouldn't use it---there's a question of continued use having the turtle building a resistance to it. If your water is treated with chloramine/chlorine, use a dechlorinator to condition the water. If you're trying to guard against bacteria or disease, keep your turtle tank clean and change the water regularly. Personally, I'd spend the money on other things for your turtles.

I do change the water pretty frequently, at least once a week, and my filter, tho crappy (fluval 1), seems to be doing a reasonable job keeping the tank clean. The product basically looks like the one in the pic above... I guess I'll go return this thing to the store. Thanks everybody.
