Turtlefriend, how much of a current does the filter make that your turtles would crash into the side of the tank? How much water do you have it in? Is the nozzle above the water level? If it is, putting it under water would help, I think.

kikicool and Rickiew04, for my RES, whose in the biggest stock tank, I really don't use anything except a net to get out his poop when I see it (it can be rather large) and any other large debris. The bottom periodically gets vacuumed with a wet/dry vac when a major cleaning/water change is done. For the painteds, who are smaller and in smaller stock tanks, I use nets and a turkey baster. I've been thinking about trying the battery vac in their tanks, but haven't gotten around to it yet. :)

The turbulance is pretty high with a fluval 4, but it has an adjustable lever that you can use to turn it down a bit. And if you have small turts (under 4"), that's what I would do.....just turn it down. The lever is blue and slides side-to-side. It is located directly under where the water comes out of the filter.

I used to have a fluval 2 operating at "full blast" in my 20 gal tank & it was totally fine for my hatchling. He never had any trouble swimming thru the stream of water shooting up from the filter.

i have the fluval 4 in my 20 gal long tank, and it does a great job in it. my turtle is about 3" long and it does not have any trouble at all swimming into the currents. if you buy the canaster ones try petland discount out to buy it there usually on sale for way less then several people have said they were. you can get a 305 for about 120.00 in u.s currency
