I've read in several posts here that using a mesh top can block important UV rays. I was wondering what kind of top can I use? The reason I ask is because I have two cats, and I don't want them to get into the tank. Thanks.

you could make something out of chicken wire. I have a screen top on mine right now. I don't know if it really blocks any of the uv rays but I need it there for now because one of my turts got loose.

You can also use a mesh called hardware cloth. I'd say 1/2" spacing on the mesh would be good, just make sure your turts don't try to start sticking anything through it...

So the rule of thumb is the spacing must be approximately 1/2"? Thanks, I will look for something like that.

The hardware cloth is good--I use the 1/2-inch size (it comes in 1/4 inch size as well) on outdoor enclosures and plan to make some half screens for indoor tanks this winter. It's relatively strong--I've seen pictures of people placing their lights on top of it.

Can you get it a regular hardware store? Or do you have to go to a special store? Thanks.

You should be able to get it at a hardware store (it is called hardware cloth :D ), but I got mine at a store that sells feed and grain/ farm animal supplies. Do you have a Tractor Supply Company near you? I know you can get it there.

Hardware cloth comes in rolls.

No, I don't have a tractor supply company nearby, but I can see if Home Depot or somewhere like that sells it.

They should have it as well. Good luck. :)
