it is beautiful. I sure like crystal clear water!! let us know if anything happens unexpectedly. I wasnt able to clean my filter as normal this weekend. I will tomorrow so I will know if there is an unusual amount of gunk. But the filter sounds good, the flow seems the same as well. Who pantyhose would come in that handy?!

So, even though I don't have my filter as of yet please bare with me for my lack of filter knowledge. But can anyone show a little slide-show of how this fine filtration looks? I can't visualize it even with you guys saying you put it on the "seperator grid".

Thanks! I will, I am keeping tabs on it so far, I will be listening to the filter for any particular strain, and putting my hand over the outflow to check for reduced flow. But so far, so good.

JimmyJam,
I knew I should have taken a photo of it before I set up the tank!!
I'll take down my filter right now to see how much gunk is on it, and take a picture for you.

That would come in handy, but I don't see how that could help so much!?

It would be a backup filter keeping out any particles that may have passed through the other medias.

because the holes in it are so fine no particles would be able to pass through it. only very clean water would go through

I know how I could make that work for a hang-on tank filter......Buy a box of filter cartridges where you have to make it yourself and put the carbon in and everything...instead just slip pantyhose over the frame and stick carbon in it instead of using filter pads.

Brent,
You could just put the stockings on the end of the outflow of the filter. So, put it on the filter like a sock, and then water that outflows past all other media will be caught as it enters the aquarium.

This would work better because water gets sucked in through the intake and just kind of gets pulled to the bottom then rises to the top, so it wouldn't guarantee to be forced through the stocking like it would if it was like a sock on the outflows.

I wonder -

I have the Marineland Magnum 350 canister and it has always kept the water crystal clear by itself. I was so surprised and happy with the performance of this filter.

I have the intake a good 4" above the sand, if not maybe another inch or half, but a few particles of sand slipped through and now I need to replace the magnet on the wheel assembly. I discovered the problem a few days ago after taking apart the filter to try and see what the rattle was from.

I have ordered a replacement, but have been trying to figure out what I can do to keep that from happening again. I will, of course, turn off the filter when doing the daily tank maintenance from now and and should have done that to begin with - my bad.

I just wonder if maybe putting a hose on the outside of the intake would help with that?

Some people by filter sponges and attatch them by cutting an x through the top or stick it down the tubing.

Yes, a piece of stockin tied on there would be great when your doing maintenance and stuff, because the sand wouldnt pass it.

But for an all the time intake cover, I would just get a piece of filter foam for the Aquaclear filters, and then cut an x in it, and push it over.

PM mat012, she has one on her tank and knows a lot more about it than I do.
