I clean mine once a month. Replace carbon and purigen. And its nasty!
1 Male Mississippi Map/Mississippi
1 Female RES/Slidy.
1 DBT White Concentric Female/ Lucky
1 DBT Male/ Spots
(Housed in the same tank)

300 gallon indoor stock tank, FX6 & FX5 filters. Mega-Ray 100w UVB bulb.

Mine usually take 4-6 months and it stays pretty clean. clean bottom with rocks to play with I guess helps.

If you are using carbon, it should be replaced monthly. Best time to do it is during a water change so it can absorb the chlorine/chloramines. Or prefilter the water if you are going to skip any chemical media.

Aside from removing chlorine & chloramine, let's not forget that carbon also helps keep the water crystal clear too. Do your own research but I'd never run a filter on freshwater without carbon.
