For that size you'd be better off with a canister filter.

Although, one member keeps a HUGE female turtle in a 90 gallon with a fluval 4 plus filter

Ya for a 75gal tank get something that will filter a 150gal or more. Lots of people use the Fluval series of canister filters. They seem to really like them. I use the Eheime brand of canisters and mine is super quiet and does a good job.

You released them?

And yes you can make a set up for around 500. But the Tank and filter are going to be your main expenses. You MUST (imho) have a good filter, basking platform, UVB light, heater. The rest is optional. Water quality and temperature control are the fundamentals.

lol nothing is wrong about releasing wild animals ,in fact it's great that you released them. But generally you shouldn't take turtles from the wild, unless they were injured or need help.

I have to agree with Teno 100%. If you want a turtle get a captive bread one or better yet call a rescue center and adopt one.

LOL it came for a visit hey.

Ok back to your 500buck budget. I would say you should search for the biggest tank/filter (that can filter twice the size of your tank, Ex.. 50gal tank 100gal filter) for 400 bucks. That leaves 100 for heater, UVB light, basking platform (which if you get creative you can make for very cheap), food and basking lamp.
Check the local papers and online for good used tanks.
