Hi there! We just bought a 90 gallon tank for Tanga. Now we need to get the filter. We've decided to go with the Rena X3 since most people on here seem happy with it.

However, we will only be putting in 20 gallons of water max for the time being. (Why? She is still little (1.75 inches). And we live in SoCal, not allowed any pets, if there is an earthquake I need to minimize the water damage so our landlady doesn't kill us.)

Okay, so the tank is on a 36 inch stand, the filter will go underneath it. I am not sure how far that puts the filter from the tank, but it seems like you just need to not have them on the same level?

Questions (finally!):
1. Will that filter be too strong? I'd prefer to only buy once, i.e., buy big now and grow into it.
2. Will the filter be too powerful for Tanga? She is a good swimmer and enjoys the current from her in tank filter now.

THANKS!

Don't worry! Raise the basking ramp and fill that tank up! Your little turt will love it. I think that if you have an earthquake, water damage will be the least of your problems.
Cannister filters are designed to be under the tank. I've seen pics of setups that had both the tank and filter on the floor but I don't think it's good for the motor.
I don't own an XP but I think they use a spraybar on the output. I dont think the current will be too strong.

You do need to add more water, both for your turtle (who will be happier) and for the filter, which will work better if the water is higher. If you're concerned about your turtle being in water that's too deep, in addition to the basking area, add some fake floating plants for him to rest on and hide in (looks nicer too).

With the XP3, you do have the option of using a spout output or a spray bar, which creates a more gentle current. Have it under the water level and aimed toward the wall of the tank for the least current.
