hey im still workin out what i'll use with my 55 gal tank and i was wondering if u guys could give me any advice on a filter. the tank came with a hang on filter but i know its not going to be sufficient. what gph should i look for? anyone else got a 55 gal? what do u use?

I'd recommend an XP3, it's a great filter for a very reasonable price (around $100). It's got lots of room for different media, and it's easy to maintain. I have one on my 75 gal tank and it does a great job, so it would be more than sufficient for a 55 gal tank.

yeah after readin around the forums i was thinkin that. what exactly goes into setting up and maintaining one of these bio-filters. the only ones ive ever used have been mechanical.

The bio filter is just a bunch of cermaic rings or stars that provide a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow on. All that's required to maintain that part of the filter is to rinse it out in tank water (not tap water) when you clean out your filter.

go to a pet store and look at the box...it usually says something like filters 300 gallon an hour for 55 gal.

55-gallon tanks do well with 300 plus. I suggest that you go to 350 gph if you can. I like a little stir in the water and anything less will not do it. Anything less will give your tank dead areas. I think more movement is healthier for them. b.
