I just set it up this afternoon, and I'm beginning to notice that nothing is going in into the filter.. the suction power is very non-existant.. but water still shoots out from the hole at the top.

I'm very confused.. is the product defective or is it just how the filter works??

If you impeller is turning you have some stoppage in the suction or discharge. It is probably someting in media, carbon, section.

If you are getting a strong output, then it is working. The Fluval + filters aren't really the best filters out there. With most filters, you'll only see smaller particles being sucked in.
