Hi I'm a new turtle owner. I've had a Southern painted turtle hatchling (1.2") for about a month now. I've researched all aspects of caring for turtles. I have a heat lamp and a 14W 5.0 UVB light over its basking area. The UVB light is 9 inches away from where it likes to bask. It could bask 8 inches away but I guess it has chosen to bask where the temp is more favourable. Anyway I think I read a while back that 14Watts is too weak, is this the case because I just noticed mine.

When you replace your UVB bulb (they should be replaced every 6 months), look for the 26 watt version of the 5.0 Repti Glo. You don't get as much UVB as the turtle needs from the bulb you've got, though placing it very close to the turtle like you have will help.

With the bulb so close, keep an eye on your turtle's eyes. If they seem to be irritating him or if you notice any swelling, then try moving the bulb further away.
