I have to say something about this product, because I am so impressed. i have been having calcium problems with my wee collared almost since I bought him, and it is a sort of genetic problem. I have had to go to some severe measures to ensure that his calcium uptake remains ok. I got 4 of these to replace my MVBs in all the kids enclosures a couple weeks ago. He seems to be cured. I am still supplementing calcium, but he seems to be processing it without real sunlight, or vitamin D supplementation. Nubbin is eating more veggies, and the turts are basking way more. I am really impressed, and I wanted to share, because I think they are truly a superior product. They are also the same price or less than T rex and Power sun. I also feel that the opinions expressed by the site are great, and expressed honestly.

That's good to hear! Bobmac is supposed to be a great person, going an extra mile to make sure the bulbs are good. He also ships to a lot more places, making MVBs more accessible. They're supposed to be the same as T-Rex, but the added assurance is worth it!

He's also got Compact Fluorescents... though that's pretty new for them. I wonder if they're rebranded or exclusive...

edit -- note correction
The site clearly states that there is NO UVB output with their fluorescents.

Hi Scripta,

Were you previously using Powersuns or T Rex's? I went from Powersun to T Rex about a year and a half ago and was greatly impressed with how much better Spot basked under the T Rex. In a few months I'll need to replace the T Rex and if there's something out there that's even better, I'd love to know about it.

I have used both T-Rex and Powersun. I think the T-Rex is better than the powersun, but i also think the Mega ray is better than the T-rex. Hannibal has had both, and I know he wasn't absorbing as much UVB as he is now. The calcium levels in his blood are higher, and his blues and oranges have brightened as well. I think they are second best only to sunlight. Bob Mac impressed me by stating that sunlight was the very best as well. He highly encourages as much sun as possible, with the bulb as a supplement to real light. I like the site for that reason, as much as I like the price and effectiveness of the lamps. The 160 watt Mega Ray is 39.95, which is less than I paid for the T-Rex

I would like to use one but will it work using a clamp lamp at an angle rather than pointing straight down? Perhaps the angled UVB would still be better than the angled CFL.

I have it at a slight angle for both of the turtles, and it seems to be fine. I know the ideal is pointing straight down, but it isn't always possible.

I've used both the T-Rex and the Mega-Ray and my turtles have responded well to both. The Mega-Ray is very good. Maybe it's just my luck, but the T-Rex seemed to have greater longevity.

I think suspending the bulb straight down is better---the turtles are less apt to look at it, even accidently. The Mega-Ray is a "narrow flood" and concentrates the light a bit more than a T-Rex flood.
