From what I've seen and read, filters that tout themselves as made for turtles (Zoo-Med's, the Plus series by Fluval, for example) aren't that effective. If you've got a larger tank, a good canister filter (which is intended for fish) is the most effective in terms of keeping the water quality up. And I'd go for one rated 3X the size of the tank.
