I have a 40 gallon breeder (still, even though the turtle is too big), and I've been using a Rena XP3 for the last year and a half. It's a great filter!
The best advice I can give is, your turtle can live 40 years and can get as big as 12", which will require over 100 gallons for a tank. Get the biggest, craziest canister filter you can afford. Think of it as an investment. You'll use the same filter as you upgrade your tank. For instance, if you end up with a male, you may only need a 75 gallon tank, which the Rena XP3 will still work well for. If you have a female and end up needing a bigger tank, the Fluval FX5 is a powerful filter. Neither of those will be too bad for a smaller tank for the current time, either.
It may seem like a lot, but it is well worth it. I just moved and had to clean out the tank and it was such a pain in the butt. Meanwhile, with the Rena XP3, I just have to clean out the filter every 6 weeks. Check out ebay, I got mine on there for $120 including shipping.
