1" ID vinyl hose can be used.

I'd use the reinforced 1" ID vinyl tubing as opposed to regular vinyl tubing for this or any filter. Regular vinyl tubing can easily kink, stopping water flow. The tubing that comes with the XP series filters is one of my biggest gripes with that filter. The tubing is really soft and pliable... and kinks easily if you have any slack. I leave a little slack in my lines so I can pull the canister body out of the cabinet when I need to service them.

Because of the ribbed tubing on the FX5, I would not suggest using some kind of hose barb adapter spliced into the line. As pridg mentioned... I'd just replace the entire length with 1" ID tubing if you need to.
