HOBs can be used, though you will likely need to do some modification to the tank or filter. The rims on most plastic stock tanks are larger than the rims on aquariums.

As for internals.... I don't think so. I did use one when I had to temporarily use a 100 gallon stock tank. Not great since it will not be as effective and require more frequent maintenance. The small media capacity, flow rate and taking up space are all cons.

Thanks for the advice, Steve. Guess I would probably go for an external canister filter if possible by this end of year. Any recommendations on them? :)

The FX5 or FX6 used to be one of the best deals out there. The prices have gone up (that happens to popular filters) so I would start with there.
