General Care Discussion :: Arrangements for future care

The other day I got to thinkin; what would happen to all my 'kids' if I stepped in front of a bus tomorrow? There are no shelters in my area, and VERY few people I would trust with such a thing. I guess I'll have to get some new friends.

Just wondering how many of you have thought this through, and if so, what your plans are.

I'm in the process of putting everything in writing as far as feeding schedules/menu items/and all the other basic care info. The thought of them ending up in a pet store or just being released somewhere is just dreadful. My sister told me she'd make sure the turtles were taken care of, but she wouldn't take the snake. I don't trust her to do exactly what's written anyway. My close friend would take them but I'd be out of luck if it happened any time soon because she doesn't have the space right now.

I know this may sound absurd but my pets are like my children. Any ideas?

OMG! And I thought that I was someone who liked to have "everything" planned out... you are so much more prepared than me on this matter. It hasn't even crossed my mind. I've teased my kids as to which one is going to take Koopa when they are grown up but that's as far as it's gone.

It sounds like you are off to a good start though. I'd hate to see them turned loose as well.

And be careful around buses, ok?

Is this to plan out your will or what? I'd hate to think what dreadful things could happen the next day, especially what would be of the turtles. My family knows only half of the essential care that I do, so I'd not play out nightmares for now .

I have thought of this. I have someone who would be willing to find them homes, but I'm going to try to have a more concrete plan that that.

I don't have specific plans for all of my animals. But my turtles would definetely have a forever home should something happen to me. My boyfirend loves then as much as I do and I've taught him to properly care for them.

On the plus side though I don't plan on going anywhere any time soo though.

If something happened to me, I trust my partner to take care of my pets. Although he is not a reptile enthusiast, he has come to love my turtles and snake and has become really protective of them.

A little background: My partner and I have been together for 5 1/2 years, and living together for 2. At some point in the year or so after he moved in with me, he started telling people "We have two turtles and a snake..." and that made me feel all warm and fuzzy because it was like he had adopted my kids Before it was "Priscilla has two turtles and a snake."

I know that if something happened to me, he would take care of them; he would either care for them himself or find them suitable homes. About 18 months ago, I tore a ligament in my leg and he did much of the turtle care when I was basically hobbled.

Before R and I got together, I made arrangements with various of my friends for the care of my animals in the event of my death.

Lucky. When they took a broken nail out of my foot less than a month ago, I had to hobble around with pain in my right foot to feed the fish and the turtles. I also had to set up the filter standing on a chair (I'm really short ) so there goes help. It worries me sometimes but I'll start teaching my parents how to take care of them later, now realizing what can happen.
