My turtle has swollen eyes due to vitamin A deficiancy, i was wondering if Flukers Repta Rinse would be useful for his swollen eyes......ingredients are, distilled water, Propylene Glycol, Glycerin, Benzalkonium Chloride, and Sodium Chloride. Somebody let me know, my turtle hasnt eaten for 2 weeks now due to his eyes.

If he has a vitamin A deficiency, get him the zoo med repti turtle eye drops, it has vitamin A. You should also start adding vitamin A to his diet in the form of carrots and other veggies (you can look this up in the feeding section). THe drops you mentioned don't seem helpful.
Good luck

You can also do a search on the forum for Cod Liver Oil.. I believe that's also an option. I'd have to agree with meg in that the drops you mentioned don't seem like they'd help the Vit A deficiency at all.

Does anyone know if petsmart sells the zoo med turtle eye drops? This is all I found on their site: http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441781753&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302030052&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023694&bmUID=1163380920183&itemNo=0&Ntt=turtle+eye&In=All&previousText=turtle+eye&N=2 Will this work the same way? I am having the same problem with Stewie....I finally got him eating and then he stopped again....I noticed today that he was swimming into EVERYTHING....His bridge/hiding place, the tank sides, his heater and his filter. I took him out to get a closer and better look and his eyes are swollen shut. I want to try the drops before taking him to a vet...I know of one pet store that sells the zoo med stuff ya'll are talking about....But it's a good 45 minutes from my house (and that's without traffic)...It's the petstore i prefer, but only get there on "special" occassions. If I could get this from petsmart it would be a lot easier.

It says this on their website...
Nature Zone

A liquid cleaning agent to treat turtle eye problems. Sometimes a turtles eyes may become inflamed from the dirt, debris, and germs in their water. TURTLE EYE DROPS help relieve this problem.

TURTLE EYE DROPS, is a gentle ophthalmic rinse and cleanser.

TURTLE EYE DROPS helps remedy and prevent eye infections in turtles by cleansing the eye and removing any dirt or organic material which may be irritating the eye.

If you have a Vit A deficiency I'd stick with the Cod Liver Oil, was this diagnosed by a vet?

I'd like to re-state what has been said in previous posts, that swollen/closed eyes is not always a Vit A deficiency. The eyelids and surrounding area are very sensitive, so do not automatically assume that it is a vitamin deficiency.

Trying various (and random) remedies is not recommended since you need to know the cause of the problem before you can properly treat it. This could also delay appropriate treatment, which can be dangerous in serious situation.

RE: The Zoo Med drops
This is a good product, however you must be prepared to take your turtle to a herp vet if the situation becomes worse or if the drops have no effect.

I went to the vet and it was vitamin A def. the skin was turning moldy and everything. I finally got some eye drops for his eyes from the vet and a vitamin A solution that I tube feed him once a week for four months. Now I am tube feeding him mushed turtle food mixed with 1/2 pedyialite and 1/2 warm water. I got a special tube from the vet.
