Habitat - Indoor :: Using Tap Water

I'm finally getting my 55 gallon tomorrow after I get home from church. I expect it to take a couple days for me to clean everything and get it set up. I have to use tap water because I won't be able to pay for bottled spring water.

I wondering what kind of conditioner I should use? I see several threads that talk about using water conditioner, but none says what kind.

What is the best water conditioner I could get?

Well the reason why I'm asking this, my parents use to have a 20 gallon tank, and where we moved outside of Houston, had a lot of chemicals in the water, we didn't know, and we used tap water and they were all dead in 24 hours.

This is the first time we will use something other then Spring water for an aquarium in 6 years. I three different bottles of water conditioners, they are probably like 5 years old, but I'm wondering if they are still good, I don't see an experiation date on them, but.

Ammo Lock 2 bottle-which treats Ammonia, removes Chlorine and Chloramine, and eliminates Ammonia stress.

Tetra ContralChlorine- It says it neutralizes chlorine and chloramine for fresh and saltwater. It also says it removes Iron and copper from the water.

Then I have a Wardley Chlor out- which says it neutralizes chlorine and chloramine from the water.

All of it says it's used for Freshwater and Saltwater fish aquariums, I wanted to buy a new bottle, but now I'm wondering if one of these three would work instead. I don't see any experiation date on them also.

I would probably dump those and get an economy sized water conditioner, like Big Al's Multi-Purpose Water Conditioner.

I just checked the price and the 64 oz. is $29.99???

Is this something where I have to keep treating the water, or just re-treat it when I do a water change?

Another question, I got the aquarium, they already had some cloraine remover, so I added that. Is the water now safe, or do I need to keep adding some of the solution to it?

do you have any water test strips that you might use for your fish tanks?? If so, test the water and see how the levels are. you should only need to treat it when you change the water... or add water.

When your other fish dies...and you used tap water. How do you know it was chemicals? Maybe your PH was really messed up. Also, how did you acclimate the fish? Did you just dump them into the tap water? All this could have played a part in their 24 hour demise.

Well I added all the mollies a couple hours ago and they are all still alive, so if they are still alive tomorrow night, I'll go ahead and add Yrtle.

The pH was normal, no ammonia was detected.
