Thank you very much for the kind words! It's just a hobby. My grandfather was a carpenter and he taught me everything I knew up until he passed when I was 17. I inherited many of his tools and machines as well. Hence the 50 year old radial arm saw and shopsmith all-in-one.

I don't think I'm quite good enough to do it professionally, but sure it fun as a hobby! Thank you again!

What a great project! I wish I had the room for a little wood shop.

Well, mine's a wood shop, mechanic shop, laundry room and garage all in one. Probably why it stays so messy. ;)

Thank you for the compliment!

HUGE UPDATE!!!

Finally, the day I've been waiting for has come. My favorite part of any build project I've done: the stain!

Started with finish sanding. No pics of this cause it ain't that interesting. Sanded the entire cabinet, doors and panels using the orbital sander and a 150 grit pad.

Afterward I was left with this mess:
Image

This simply cannot do. Especially when I'm about to try to make this thing remotely pretty. So I cleaned up the garage and borrowed my neighbor's big shop vacuum to tackle the saw dust. Once I got most of it in the vacuum, I used a leaf blower to blow the rest out of the garage.

Much better:

Layed out all of the pieces that are getting stained on scrap wood off the floor.

My creative, talented and beautiful fiance picked out the stain color. It's an oil base. I went with oil base because it's a far more durable finish in my opinion. Plus, oil and water don't mix so it will withstand getting splashed and wet from the excited turt.
Image

Since the cleanup is so much messier with oil-based stain, I use cheap foam throw-away brushes. They tend to apply more evenly I've found than a bristle brush anyway.
Image

I don't use much stain at all as not much is needed. Just dipped the very tip of the brush in the stain.

Here is an initial color sampling on the basking cover.
Image

And the basking cover completed.
Image

After that, I went to town on the rest of the pieces.
Image

And here is the cabinet in all it's stained glory!
Image

I gave the stain about 2 hours to cure a bit before moving on to the next step: clear finish. I like polyurethane simply cause I haven't tried anything else. ;)
Image

Used the same type of brush but this one's a little bigger.
Image

Looks like honey.
Image

Here you can see it being applied. Making the flat stain shiny.

And again, the completed basking cover.

Finally, here is the completed cabinet with stain and polyurethane finishes applied:

W00t!!!!! Turned out pretty good!!!!

I let a little time pass and thought I could do a little more before calling it quits. I applied some glue to the in-tank light fixtures.
Image

And glued them in place.
Image

Added a little extra on top just in case.
Image

There they both are.

All in all, I'm a happy camper today! :)

My apologies. I missed your post without responding to it.

Thank you for the compliment! I am more than willing to share the plans with anyone who wants them. It's for the turtle after all. ;) I actually got this idea from a similar project that I saw on this forum. I just jazzed it up in my own way.

Thank you! I can thank my fiance for that. I was going to go with a little bit darker color but she suggested the Red Oak. I knew I was marrying her for a reson. ;)

Thank you very much! Hoping to have it completed either tonight or tomorrow. Will definitely keep y'all posted.

Only things left to purchase are tank materials. We need filter media, sand for the bottom, a ramp to get out of the tank, plants (fake for the tank and real for the decking), long tubes for the filter, and a bubbler. After that, it'll be finished!

Unfortunately, we won't be able to move it into the house until this weekend because I'm getting new floors installed. But at least it'll be ready.

Thank y'all for the kind words and support on this! Your words really motivated me to keep going on this project! :)

That stain really livened up the habitat. Love that Red Oak.

Your gonna love the sand!

Sounds like I will! I'll admit, there's gravel in his tank now. but that will be remedied with the new tank very shortly with sand.

I can't believe how great that looks! You are such an inspiration to everyone that has a DIY turtle project they keep putting off.

I only have one question. Will that fit through a door to get it inside? It just looks really huge.

Thank you! It IS huge but if I flip it on it's back, it'll fit fine. My front door is 36" wide and the cabinet is 29.5" tall so plenty of room to spare.
