Hey all,

I've been lurking around here since last week when a friend of mine and I came back from the pet store with a 1.5" RES to give to her boyfriend for his birthday (research was quickly done and better basking platforms and bulbs are currently on order!).

I spent most of the last week trying to talk myself out of getting one too and I've failed miserably. I've been into keeping things in tanks (I'm a total corydoras lover, my dream tank is 12 inches tall and about 3'x3' with a sand bottom and multiple massive cory shoals) since high school, but this is my first reptile. I'm on a tight budget for the rest of the year, having signed up to live in and fight poverty for a year in the middle of nowhere, but intend to lavish great amounts of attention and ingenuity on my turtle and its habitat now and my discretionary income when I get a for-real job with a for-real paycheck next July. Currently, I have an honestly very tacky looking but adequate setup for under $100. And once the epoxy on my rock structures dries, he should have reasonable looking places to hide and play. The turtle's name, I think, will be TBA. I keep introducing him/her to people as "Name and gender TBA," and it's sort of growing on me.

Anyway, here's a picture of the little guy with his very fancy Christmas mug cave. He's being shy, but I had just put him in about 30 minutes ago at this point, so I can understand hiding from the camera.

Welcome. Sounds like you're doing a good job. Don't feel bad about living on the cheap side. The majority of us do the same.

Your turtle doesn't look like a regular res. Can you get a pic of his plastron?

Ok, turtles are squirmy, and the camera almost wound up in the tank, so forgive the bad picture, I'm not really one for holding turtles or taking pictures one-handed, so I'll try to get a better one when I can get some help from a friend. Is this good enough for you to guess though? He does have the red "ear" spots, even if he won't stick his head out for the camera, that's why I figured RES.

I'm not the best at ID'ing, but it looks like it's a kind of RES, not a regular. The care will be exactly the same so that won't make a difference, but someone will come along and ID him properly for you. He's definitely pretty!

Ah good, you all had me a little worried there. It would be just like me to wander into a pet store to buy a very normal, garden variety turtle and come home with some extremely rare and incredibly picky turtle that only eats something ridiculous and requires some sort of astonishingly complicated tank setup.

You learn something new every day though, I didn't realize there were different kinds of RES, off to Google I go! And thanks for the compliments, he looks like all of his brothers/sisters. This little guy got the nod because he was hard to catch, I figured clever and speedy swimming was a reasonable indicator of health.

His coloration won't have an affect on his care.

Just fyi, Most regular RES have darker green carapaces with a bright yellow carapace with brown circles. Yours is very bright and colorful and has a very intricate design.
