Habitat - Indoor :: Good external filter?

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Thu Oct 06, 2005 6:18 am   Good external filter?

JUst got a 55 gallon plexiglass tank (for free! $$) we were using a 20 gallon. Because we weren't comfortable with the support structure of the tank, we never put more than 6 gallons of water in it. Once we construct a stable stand for the 55 gal. we're going to use it.

Currently, we have dual Fluval 2s cleaning that bad boy. The thing is, we got 2 more turtles from a friend who was moving. The intergation went good, they all get along awesomely. Anyway, I'm off track hehe. Was looking for some reccomendations for 55 gallons, 3 turtles, external filter. Thanks alot!

I personally love the Aquaclear series.. a 110 is rated for up to a 150 gallons... which should do fine in your 55 gallon tank. I'm sure others will offer different choices and opinions.. :)

By external filter you mean a canister? If so, the Rena Filstar XP3 is one that you'll get a lot of recommendations for (you can use it when you upgrade to an even bigger tank). I've also heard good things about Magnums and Jebos (Odyessas). What is your price range? Whatever you get, buy one rated for 3X the size of the tank.

Well like I said in my last post I just bought an eheim 2217 canister. Its rated to 650 litres so it cleans my 75 gallon like a dream. Crystal water, no odour, the pump is silent etc... For a 55 gallon I'd go with 2215. They just came out with a new "ecco" line. It has a pump action handle that primes it and pumps all air and then turns on the pump all in one motion. Ive heard good things about the Rena Filstar line (XP1,XP2,XP3). Stay away from fluval 104-404. They break down alot and the seal engineering is laughable. German engineering baby--go with eheim.

Staman, I may just have to get a tank so I can try out an Eheim (wouldn't want to put one on the stock tanks I have now). I've honestly never heard a negative thing about them (other than the price, of course). I want the Pro 2028, though.

im thinking about getting a rena filstar xp3, has anyone had any complaints?? i found it at petsmart for $104, and sorry to say id like to have the eheim but not for $250. i had a zoomed 501, and it sucked.. constantly got plugged up my turtle tank smelled. and ehh i threw it out waste of 45 dollars.

other than that what would be the best filter for a 55 gallon..

i have some polished rocks in the bottom of my tank too big for them to even get in thier mouth let alone eat it.. problem is theres some gaps between them at times..should i get an undergravel filter as well.. or whats up with that.

If you go tot petsmart, make sure you look at the prices online, and make a print out.... they will give you the item for the price online but you HAVE to bring it with you. I got an Aquaclear 110 for $35 instead of the $70 the store was charging.

I got my Eheim 2217 for 199.00 CDN on sale. You should be able to do way better than 250.00 U.S. As well if you only have a 55 gallon the 2215 would serve you well. The pet store here has those on sale as well for 149.00 CDN. You wont regret your purchase :)
