I have play sand as well that is really fine. The finer the sand, the better. If the turtle accidentally eats some, he shouldn't have any issues digesting it.

Hey guys:

I'm thinking of using SAND in my aquarium. I have a 14x19x48 = 54gallon. I have a 5.5" res and was wondering how much sand to add and which type.

*I'm thinking 2"inches deep everywhere except for my basking spot area with an incline of 3-4inches of sand (With an incline platform under the incline of the sand). So 6 gallons of sand which is roughly a 35lb bag? What do you think?

*Which sand is best for the price? Do all types of sand make the water cloggy? She probably will tend to eat the sand and dig a lot.

Thanks alot.

I have the same size tank, my turtle is 6inches.
I bought 1 55lb bag of play sand for $5. It gives about 1-2inches on the bottom, Sassamo digs and moves it around a lot.
I rinsed it well and the water was cloudy for a couple days then was crystal clear.
I honestly don't think the 3-4inch incline would work in there, it would just take up swimming space. Plus your turtle would have fun digging it up. I have my tank filled too the rim and an on top of tank basking area for her.
My favorite things in the world:
1 res, 3 cats, 3 bunnies, 1 dog, 2 african clawed frogs, guppies, pleco, 30+ fancy mice, 2 hermit crabs and 4 small humans

Awesome.

I was thinking adding 2-3 inches deep and then on the inclined area I would use an upside down plastic container. My Zoomed turtle hut would be ontop of it and with sand. So if she was to dig the sand around the incline the turtle hut would still be fine.

The reason why I need an incline is this is one of her favorite basking things. I want it to be raised and provide a more unique feel for her rather than the ordinary hut and water

thanks

I really like the look of the green sand. I thought it wouldnt look good when I saw it in the bag, but it came out very nice.

That looks great! Are you going to remove one of the hoods and add a basking area with lights?

Just a note, I added chrisinva's tank to the front page as a great example of colored sand. I also put in a little piece saying that you can get blue, green and purple from walmart.

Purple is available right?
