Turtles need to be in the water to eat. They need the water to swallow. If you want to train one you must have them in the water and most likely use food the train them. I have mine to act like little pigs and they do well at that!! m.

Pickle follows my fingers since I hand feed her. So, if I tap my finger nail on her dock or the log in her tank, I can get her to come and climb out of the water. That, and swiming backwards half out of the water like Flipper for a treat are her only "tricks" really.

1) You can't train a RES like that, they need to be in water to eat.
2) I have seen this guy on TV and he spent YEARS (like 10 years or something) training his turtle to do those tricks.
Toby - RES - adopted in December 2007 - 120g tank - Fluval FX5

Max - Pit Bull/Irish Setter/Dalmatian mix - adopted in March 2009

Speedy does great tricks! She ALWAYS responds to my voice- when I use the training voice that is. Well, it's not really a voice. I mean, it's kind of a voice. Sorta. Maybe. Probably. Not really. Does a high pitched yell count as a voice command?
