Can you actually buy smooth river rocks or do you have to "excavate" them. I ditched my small hagen gravel for fear they will try to eat it....
I have course gravel about 1.5 inch but i like the look of the smoth stuff..

I bought some of mine and found some of them in a creek. The ones from outside needed to be thoroughly cleaned/boiled before using. I found some beautiful river rocks at Pier 1 on sale a few months ago. Of course, they are originally meant to be used in decorating but since they are natural stones they work in the tank as well. They are gorgeous in the tank and add something for him to push around since they are extremely smooth and slide easy when pushed.

I found mine near the gardening/flowers sections in various stores and supermarkets.

I've gotten them at Walmart, Home Depot, and at craft stores like Michaels (if you get them at a craft store, check to see that they're aquarium safe).

Thx for the replies guys. Jenaero your a genius. I went to the local one dollar store and they had tons of them for a 1.50 a bag. There about 2lbs each so ill probably need 20 bags or so of them. Still way cheaper than the 80 bucks I spent on crappy Hagen gravel....:)

I only use 2 small bags. Enough for the turts to push around but not to cover the bottom of the tank. If you're really going to use that many rocks you'll probably have a hard time cleaning and the tank may start to smell.
