Okay I just had to ask if this has happened to any one else before. I was setting here watching TV yesterday and I hear this clicking noise. I thought it was the dog but it wasn't her. I look over at the turtle tank and thought oh heck my filter is going to quit. But then I see Exclamation trying to eat the thermometer. So I moved it and he/she just found it again today.

Is it a glass one with the mercury beads in it? You could try putting it somewhere he'll never get to it but with all the redecorating turtles do, he'll probably find it one day. I switched to a plastic thermometer with alcohol because i was concerned about them breaking it. The last thing you need in your tank is shards of glass and balls of mercury! With the one I have, if they break it, it's harmless.

Hey what do you think about a digital thermometer?

I'm not sure there is a digital thermometer that can take water temps, but I've never really looked. If you find one, let me know.

Here is the one I found. They have one just like it on pet smarts website. But petco is cheaper.

I just bought one a digital one from drfostersmith.com for about $5. It was on sale. It works pretty good. The only thing that goes in the water is the probe with a suction cup. I also use the stick on thermometers that stick to the outside of the tank. The two brands that I have used both worked well.

Digital thermometers have been around for 10 years. Even my multimeter has a temperature probe on it.

I know digital thermometers exist..I wasn't questioning that. I've only seen them for air temps tho. Give that one a shot. It should work for the purpose it was made. Digitals are more accurate than the others anyway.

I was also going to suggest the digital thermometer sold on drfostersmith.com, though I wonder if my turts would go after the probe..

I think we are going to get a digital one that has an alarm on it. Because winter is here and if we do actually get a bad snow and the electric goes out in the middle of the night we will know about it.

What about using an UPS (uninterruptible power supply)? They will usually beep when they lose power and are switched to battery power.

Also I forgot...we just got back from good old Wal-mart and we bought one of those stick on Thermometers that Spookster was talking about. Spookster I thought It was funny because we had just bought one and you made that post. I wasn't for sure if it would work good or not. So now I know it will work. LOL. Thanks Everyone!!!

One of the ones that I used was from Walmart. It was by Tetra.
