You need a tank stand. Uneven pressure from the tank not being fully supported can cause the glass to bow and break.

Yes it can.

It happened to me. :(

No water leaked, but, bye bye tank. Only a 10g though...

Chris, I am not sure if you have the algae under control but yesterday we placed a plant in our tank and it seems to at least be slowing the growth. It is much easier to manage now.

part of the problem with the plant idea is that my turtle eats any and every plant I put in there. He thinks it's really yummy and that I put it in there just for him to eat, hehehe. I don't mind getting plants for him to eat, but it doesn't do anything for controlling the algae growth.

Just put it on the floor. any sudden shift of weight can cause it to break.

I'm in a constant battle against my algae still.. im thinking about replacing all the sand again and starting over lol.

I got my play sand from Toys'r'us and it was pretty cheap, about 6 bucks for 50 lbs or so. It is extremely clean, soft, and since it's for kids it seems they've sanitized it. I cleaned it but it was never dirty, so that's nice. Only one color though, tan.

Settled real quick in my tank. I put sand first then water though, I should try the other way around. I don't have a problem with it not settling though. Of course my res is in a stock pond, not an aquarium, so I can't gauge exactly how cloudy it is, but it looked pretty clear to me. He really loves to dig in it.

What do ya'll do when u have to replace your sand? I remember the one time I had to do it, it clogged up my siphoning hose, and was just a mess to clean out. Do u only do it when it has a nasty algae bloom?

Ok so I got a bag of sand at Home depot cleaned it and put it in the tank. It look Really Nice! ....... But my turtle sarted eating it . Yes I know that in the beginning of the thread it says it's ok....but my turtle was eating sand for a good 20 minutes and would of never stopped (trust me I know my turtle) so I decided to take it out  so after a good 4 hours of f****g around and cleaning sand for the turtle i ended up with a really nice fish tank ( put the sand in the fish tank instead) and nothing in the bottom of my turtle tank.

tanks for the DIY

I have my tank on some semi-fluffy carpet. This is ok right? The tank's weight has smashed the carpet flat so I don't think it is a problem.

Do you need to replace the sand every 6 months or so?

Hm...

Hows Black Sand look?

I've been interested in putting black sand in when I get a larger tank.
