Cleaning the sand is what keeps it from making your water cloudy. Cleaning it out also allows you to remove any large pieces that don't belong (large meaning anything larger than sand). You can add a different kind of sand if you want, it doesn't matter. Hardware stores sell them a lot cheaper, and bigger, than pet stores.
You should empty out your tank, clean the sand you have and the new sand then fill it back up. It sounds like a lot of work, but it will allow you to use your tank and your filters sooner.
