Yep one of the first things you learn in law enforcement and emt class is to always have backup. So I got my backup! Plus I have two old filters that I used before incase this one goes awall.

Daredevilgirl: are you testing the water quality? With turtles you really need to change the filter more often than you would with fish.

I just got the filter and I will change it more often, I've been watching the water and stuff, plus with this filter it even says that it will let you know when it needs a filter change because the water won't pour out as much.

My filter came with this cheap little timer that you stick on the side of the tank...a little red light flashes when it's time to change the filter. Of course, it just flashes every twenty-eight days or so but I don' t know if the filter will hold up that long for a turtle.

I think by adding an extension tube that reaches almost all the way to the bottom might work real well. I still haven't tried it but I realize that all the leftover and waste lies in th bottom of where my filter tube is in the Aquaclear 110 (55 Gallon). The filter doesn't seem to be able to suck it up but I'm sure if I added the extension tube, it will work wonders. I'm not sure if it's the filter that drags all those leftover food and/or waste or if Survivor is actually putting it all there himself. He doesn't touch that pile at all like he knows that it's garbage. There could be pieces of carrots, lettuce, and bits of cuttlebone right under that filter tube but he doesn't touch it. He waits patiently until it's feeding time and eats the fresh vegetables and pellets I offer to him. I've read many amazing things turtle can do like one (I forgot who) who posted how they have an outdoor setup and his/her turtle would take walks around the yard every day or so and then go back into its pond. Coincidence?

No filter will suck up the turtles waste, not even the canisters. Mine does a terrific job of getting the bits and pieces but I still have to do other maintenance. I've noticed though that most of the mess that needs to be cleaned up by me is located at the end of the tank by the filter intake .. so that in itself is a time saver :) Oh and I used to have an extension tube that hit the bottom of the tank. I found that it didn't clean the tank nearly as well as one that went about 5" from the bottom ... I have a 75 gallon tank.

In case I've not said it lately.. I love my Aquaclear 110 :)

i have the same kind of set up, the 30 gallon, and the filter making alot of noise, but i filled my tank almost all the way to the top where i know that the turts can't get out and it cut down on the noise alot.
