Habitat - Indoor :: New Fish Tank!

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Sat Jul 23, 2011 11:55 pm   New Fish Tank!

I FINALLY got my fish tank setup. The tank is actually a 40 I bought as a special Tank for Kingler while she was recovering from her surgery. It was also home to my newt Newton who sadly died a few months ago. But now it is my community tank. I bought the filter and the heater off of a guy for $40 off another website. The filter is an XP3 and the heater is a Fluval 200W. I bought the drift wood for another $40. As of now, I have 3 Peppered Cories, 3 Bronze Cories and 12 Neon Tetras. I also just added my Rabbit Snail. I'm waiting for my Bosemani Rainbow fish to come in. I'm getting 3 Males and 3 Females. I bought both the lights used for $50. They came with two different Coralite bulbs.

I can't figure out how to take pictures of this tank. I don't want to use flash because I don't want to stress the fish out and it over exposes the shot. Any tips, you can see what happens when I don't use flash below.

Looks great!!!! Makes me so sad that I promised my 50 gallon away! (well kinda..I am donating ..know a guy with 3 turtles in a 20 gallon :( ). Do you have an "action shot" on your camera? Maybe try upping the lighting like steve said but use action or sports mode?

Because you're focusing on close up fish (macro style photography) set your camera for the largest aperture (lowest f/stop number). Put the camera on a tripod or rest it on a table when you take the picture.

Try putting the lens right on the glass so you're not getting the focal distortion by shooting through the angled aquarium glass. Turn the tank lights on full.

Remember if you doink with the F/stop you'll need to adjust the shutter speed as well. If your camera has aperture preference or f/stop preference, put it on that setting (usually marked with an "A" or "F" on the wheel). That SHOULD let you set your f/stop and the camera SHOULD automatically select the appropriate shutter speed. Different from camera to camera.

You can also set your film speed to a higher iso for quick moving fish in poor lighting.

You should consider getting 6 of one Cory rather than 3 of two types... They will school much better this way and you will definitely notice the difference, other than that good setup. :)

^ At first I was told that it would work with 3 and 3, but it only does sometimes. But I'm not the kind to bring fish back to a store for a reason like that.

Yeah I know what you mean... I feel really really bad even considering taking them back. I've only done it once with a pleco because I just couldn't keep up with the poo.

^ Same, I sold back a Pleco after keeping him for over a year because he got too aggressive. I also sold to Carp I raised back for $$$.
