Habitat - Indoor :: Moe's new 75G home - build thread.

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Wed Jun 20, 2012 8:29 pm   Re: Moe's new 75G home - build thread.

It depends on the turtle. My turtle for example will rip the plants apart even if he doesn't consume them immediately. My planted tank and my turtle tank are both 75G. I've tried planting my turtle tank twice... didn't fare well. I ended up with the configuration you see in this thread; essentially growing plants in a second tank and feeding my turtle trimmings.

yeah I'm thinking the tank would have to be the size of a pond, like 300 gallons and above for plants to have a chance. But I could be wrong. I will let you know when I try it lol.

Try it with inexpensive plants if you do :D

Thank you for sharing all of this information. I tend to ramble and post questions in inappropriate threads, thus I have not gotten alot of feedback. I found this thread from searching about "oily film on the surface". Oddly, your thread addressed every single one of my current concerns. I cant thank you enough. I am a bit late to the party but congrats on your son, LOVE the nursery, love the turtle knobs (WANT!) , it dosnt get better then mobile beer carts, I also broke my finger trimming wood and a peice kicked back, I have the same light stand problem when I moved Clarence from 75 to 150 gal with a MVB. Short term solution was to hang it from a dog leash from the ceiling. I think that sums it up. Thank you again for sharing all this. Clarence thanks you also.

Thanks for the kind words and I'm very glad you found it helpful. I'll try to add stuff to this thread over time and as time permits.

Yeah I wish I could have them in the same tank... no dice. My turtle is a lawnmower.

Since this thread included the birth of our fist son Derek, I should update the thread to include the birth of our new son Brandon. Brandon made his grand entrance into the world this past Thursday. I haven't been on the forum much lately because things have been a bit crazy the last couple of weeks. It's almost 3AM, we're still in the hospital but hoping to go home tomorrow, and I'm writing this in between feedings. Here's a pic of Derek and his new baby brother Brandon. I must apologize as this post has nothing what so ever to do with turtles, so I'll include a  for good measure. Cheers everyone... back soon. -VC

Greetings,

I essentially have the same setup as you.

Similar stand and filter placement.
75 Gallon Tank
Fluval FX5

I have been having a problem with air getting into my filter. I was wondering if you had the same issue and how you went about fixing it if so...
Would having an intake hose that's shorter than the output hose cause an issue like this? I've tried having the hoses at opposite ends of the aquarium as well as right next to each other(output jets to the other end of the tank to avoid going right back into the intake). I have taken apart the filter, checked my media for any blockages, check the o ring around the lid, and even put it back together with water in the hoses so when first turning it on no air is sucked in.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks everyone.

kwilson23> The different length of hoses would not cause air to get in the filter.

The FX5 has a computer chip with a program that shuts the filter off once a day to purge air from the canister body. Are you running your filter 24x7?

IF you haven't already try lubricating that o-ring with some petroleum jelly. What I'd suspect is a small pinhole in the intake hose or a small hole somewhere where the hose attaches to the canister.
