My basking temp is about 106 degrees and the water is about 78...i know the basking temp is supposed to be only 10 degrees higher than the water but i dont know how to bring the temp down.....the lamp is about 6 inches away from the basking area...Should i make the basking area further? Or should i get a lower wattage...right nows its 60watts..somebody help!!!!
Definitely raise the bulb height or get a lower wattage. That high of a temp can really hurt your turtle. A good basking temp is around 88-90. Experiment with either moving it farther away or a lower wattage bulb until it decreases in temperature.
Thanks sonyj and cam...i moved everything around in my tank today so now the basking area temp is around 90 on the dot=)...my tank is 30G and its filled up to 16G
Well unless there is some reason as to why the water can't be higher, such as perhaps you have a weak and sick turtle, the more water the better. Not only does it give the turtle more room to swim and exercise but it will also help with the water quality. For lack of a better analogy.. it's like someone peeing in your pool versus someone peeing in the ocean ..
