The air pumps are for bubble walls, bubbles stones, etc.
Biomedia is for biological filtration. Little bacteria live in them and eat waste, etc.

They are types of biomedia that are put in filters for beneficial bacteria to colonize on.

I have an Aquaclear 110... I use the carbon and ammonia packets. You can also use ceramic rings/stars. I've never had a problem using just what came with the filter and I've had it for nearly a year now.

Didn't you get an ammonia packet or anything other than the sponge and the carbon. Any aquaclear filter I've gotten had 3 different types of media.
