I put 4 little Rose Minnows in the tank and they were good for a few hours, but once the light went out, they got eaten. When I woke up there was only one left, by the time I came back from the market... that one was gone to. LOL

I guess as long as your turtle can catch it, they will eat it.

Fast fish and a lot of hiding places could help but a big tank is key to give the fish an area to escape to.

Fish are food not friends to a turtle. I'd go with small fast fish and add a lot of hiding places.

Unless you're my turtle, then you allow the fish to live long enough to piss you off and then you play with them instead of eating them. It was nasty.

Within a few weeks of my son first getting his, we put in three black neon tetras in the 20 gallon long with a less than 1" turtle. One didn't make it because of unfamiliarity with tank cycling when I changed filters.

Once we moved to a 55 gallon tank, the two black neons moved with her* and we added 7 neon tetras. All was fine for months until the one day there were 6 neons. I figured maybe a death that became food. Two days later, there were 4 neons and they got moved to the refugium. The black neons stayed. Five months later, they are still there.

The tank is in the basement. I had gone down one morning without turning the overhead lights on to grab laundry from the dryer that I needed that day. I was there when the tank lights turned on from the timer. I swear I saw one of the black neons swimming in front of Tobi*, almost teasing, and Tobi making half-hearted signs of snapping at it. But Tobi never really went after it.

I don't know. Maybe having grown up with them from the time the fish were bigger than she was means they aren't really prey? I hold no illusions that will remain the status quo.

*my son named the turtle Toby, and we've always called it "him." We're not at 4" yet, but I'm pretty certain he is a she. This is the first time I've used the feminine to refer to her here and the first time I've used the feminine spelling.

yep I know what you mean, I put 10 minnows in the big tank when I set it up. The guppies and one minnow that were in the old tank got moved. By the end of the first week there were only 3 minnows left. It's like Toku will let a select few survive but no more. He eats a guppy every once in awhile but they breed so much their population is steadily growing.
