Hey everyone !

I'm new to this board and have already learned sooooo much by reading all of your comments and posts !! :D

Quick question - I have found a nice second hand tank, but i was a bit to over-enthusiastic to go BIG and directly bought the 120cm one (+/-62 gallon).

However, i now noticed that the low table (cabinet like), with iron structure, is a bit shorter than the tank itself.
This would mean that there would be 10 cm overhang on each side (5 inches).

Would it be OK if i cover the table / cabinet with a thick plank of plywood the size of the tank and a thin layer of styrofoam (to absorb shocks?)

Many thanks !

That should work fine. Don't think I wouldn't use any Styrofoam thought. The thicker the wood the better!

I would add support legs. I've added very thin strips of Styrofoam (the weather strip kind) between the tank and stand but you can probably go without it.

I bought a used 80 gallon tank with supporting cabinet. The cabinet portion forms a pedestal on top of which is 1/2 inch plywood platform cantilevered beyond the ends of the cabinet about 8 inches and the front about 4 inches. Because the plywood has a nice 1 1/2 inch skirt on the edges, I didn't notice until I got this support structure home that the 1/2 inch ply was inadequate to support the weight of the aquarium and the cantilevered portions had all deformed downwards by some fractions of an inch. So I bought piece of 1 inch construction grade plywood and cut a piece 16x48 inches and placed this on top of the 1/2 inch ply, then shimmed it level. The tank sits on top of the 1 inch plywood and is perfectly level in all directions. Plus, I'm a lot more confident in the strength of the 1 inch ply to support the filled tank. Since the tank has a "floating bottom" there is no need for styrofoam because all the weight is on the edges. In fact, there should be nothing touching the bottom glass of a floating bottom tank as it could stress the glass causing it to fail eventually.
