Habitat - Indoor :: Tap Water vs. Filtered Water?

So i looked and couldn't find anything on this topic so i was curious.

When adding the initial water, or even doing water changes should i be using Filtered Water or is Tap Water ok? I have a 5 stage Reverse Osmosis unit in my kitchen and have been using that or gallon's of bottled water for the tank (and my dogs, etc) because i don't like tap water i figured the animals wouldn't either.

Any Idea's on this?

I've heard not to use the reverse osmosis water in your tank (sorry but can't remember why - search the forum because there's been a topic on it in the past). Using tap water is fine as long as you add a dechlorinator when filling the tank with it. I have just a simple filter in the kitchen, and that's what I use when adding partial water to the tank in between cleanings so I won't have to worry with the chlorine. But for full tank changes I just use tap water and add the dechlorinator.

Buying water buy the gallons is going to get really expensive when you have a 55 gallon tank or larger. We have well water here, and I still use the tap water. I've been doing it for several months and even the fish survive.

ok cool, thanks for the help. Maybe iwill just get a cheap faucet filter that gets rid of the amonia and chlorine then test it.

If you're using a filter with bio-media, you should consider using a water conditioner. If you don't have any water quality issues in your area, then further treatment probably isn't necessary.

i just leave water in a 70 ish gallon garbage bin (clean bin of course) in the basement/backyard/balcony or where ever, and i leave it at least 2-3 days so all the chlorine could dissipitate, its never been a problem with my fishes and turtles
